Risperdal (also sold under the generic name Risperidone) or under the brand name Invega (generic name paliperidone) is an anti-psychotic drug manufactured by Johnson & Johnson and sold through its pharmaceutical unit Janssen. These are anti-psychotic medications that had been approved by the FDA for use in adults. In an effort to increase its sales J&J representatives convinced doctors to prescribe Risperdal to children for unapproved “off label” uses. It did this by having its salesforce hire doctors as spokesmen and investing large sums of money in lavish seminars and golf outings to persuade physicians to use their drug for these unapproved uses in children.

The FDA has now warned consumers that the use of Risperdal by boys and adolescent males will result in an increased level of the hormone Prolactin which stimulates the growth of breast tissue and milk production. Gynecomastia, as this condition is known, can require surgery to remove the unwanted breast tissue and cause serious psychological damage in young men just entering puberty.

Several states Attorney Generals have filed lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson accusing the corporate giant of concealing the dangerous side effects of Risperdal and aggressively marketing it to children knowing it could cause permanent damage. In 2012 J&J reached a settlement with these states paying hundreds of millions of dollars in damages. More recently, in November of 2013 the Federal Government announced a 2.2 Billion dollar settlement with Johnson & Johnson to resolve criminal and civil allegations of wrongdoing involving its marketing of prescription drugs, including Risperdal, for “off label” uses.

The Dangerous Side Effects of Risperdal include:

  • Growth of unwanted breast tissue in boys (Gynecomastia)
  • Lactation or nipple discharge in boys
  • Swollen or discolored nipples
  • Breast tenderness
  • Asymmetrical breast enlargement
  • Involuntary repetitive body movements known as Tardive Dyskinesia
  • Diabetes
  • Weight Gain
  • Stroke
